MARIANO MARCOS MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
The History of our School
All great things come from small beginnings. Such is Mariano Marcos Memorial High School which had its humble birth as a mere annex of Villamor High School and was formerly located at Syquia St., Sta. Ana, Manila. It became an independent school only on July 11, 1966 and was named after Manuel dela Fuente.
Its first principal was Dr. Hidulfo C. Vasquez whose teamwork with the incumbent Parent Teacher Community Association (PTCA) president (Ret) Lt. Col Eduardo C. Morales reaped fruitful ventures specially the expropriation of a new site for the school in 1976. The new school site situated along the very busy thorough fare of Dr. M. Carreon St., was formerly owned by Amerex, a business company. After its transfer, Manuel dela Fuente High School was renamed, Mariano Marcos Memorial High School, in honor of the father of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos on January 1978 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 26.
Dr. Consolacion C. Domingo took over the former principal after his retirement, and initiated the academic building at first known as Havana Building and later called Marcos Hall. It was a three-storey building which only saw completion and inauguration during the term of its third principal, Mrs. Carmencita P. Laforteza.
Mrs. Laforteza spearheaded the rise of the two-storey NCR Building behind the Marcos Hall and another three-storey building, the Aquino building, fronting the HE and Vocational Buildings. The school with her dynamic leadership earned its mark in the fields of journalism, athletic, academic and arts. It was capped by her winning the NCR’s Outstanding Principal Award.
She was succeeded by another male principal, Mr. Dioscoro G. Vasquez, who successfully spearheaded the construction of the other buildings to the school site namely, the Ocampo Building and the SEF Building. His leadership empowered the faculty through the study grants, scholarship grants, local and international. In his term, the Faculty Cooperative had started to allow more benefits and incentives to the teachers. The School was cited among the most beautiful schools because of its functional gardens and scenery.
In January 2000, Ms. Julita C. Antonio, the fifth principal took over her predecessor and immediately launched her CCP policy of courtesy, cleanliness and punctuality. During her term, the school saw the discovery of a promising future as it was named NCR’s pilot school for Special Program in the Arts (SPA).
Upon her early retirement due to health reasons, Miss Hermelinda M. Rodriguez was assigned to serve as the school’s sixth principal. As soon as she officially reported as school head, she has revived and revitalized the school’s learning environment, the teachers and the students. She personally initiated a more vigorous campaign for cleanliness and excellence. Her dynamism affected the students’ achievement as they start bringing home again recognitions and awards. The school rondalla ably represented the region to the Nationwide NAMCYA competition in music and the science students were ranked first in the division in the science competition making the school the topnotcher among other schools.
The seventh principal, Mrs. Olimpiada L. Camilo, continued the legacy left by her predecessors. She initiated the intervention programs like review classes and mentoring in preparation for the National Achievement Test and Division Final Achievement Test. Her efforts were rewarded by when the school ranked 6th in the NAT and Division Achievement Test. During her service, the completion of the SEF building was made possible. Her three years stay in Mariano Marcos Memorial High School was also a picture of growth and development.
She was then succeeded by the eight principal, Miss Angela Y. Ong. Rehabilitation and improvement of school buildings and facilities were initiated and completed. Her term marked the start of some best practices in the SBM implementation at Mariano Marcos Memorial High School through her initiative. NGOs like the PETA with its Art Zone Project and the Speech Laboratory spearheaded by the office of the Vice Mayor of Manila, paved its way to improved learning environment of the school.
Under the ninth principal, Dr. Virginia F. Bermudez, the renovation of the old Administration Building was done to provide additional rooms and offices.
The construction of the whole administration Building was completed during the term of the tenth and the present principal, Mrs. Doris F. Ho. Mariano Marcos Memorial High School now has a total of eight buildings and 89 classrooms. Seven months after assuming office, Mrs. Ho instituted the Opening of ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM (August, 2013) and the opening of EVENING VOCATIONAL SCHOOL (August, 2013). To date, the ALS boasts of 2 Passers and 3 EVS Graduation Rites. School leavers and community residents are given equitable access to appropriate learning and life-skills program through these interventions.
It is also under her leadership where the first batch of the Senior High School Program was initiated under the K-12 curriculum was implemented in the school year 2013 – 2014.

The original name of Santa Ana before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores was Namayan, a small settlement whose last recorded rulers were Lakan Tagkan or Lacantagean, and his wife Queen Buwan or Bouan (“Moon”). The Muslim kingdom’s domain stretched from what is now Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasay, and the Manila districts of Pandacan and Paco.
Sta. Ana is famed for its strong historical and cultural heritage. The Spaniards established settlements in Santa Ana, that served as the seat of Namayan, with the area awarded to the Franciscan missionaries. They were the first to establish a mission beyond the walls of Intramuros, the Spanish colonial seat of power in Manila in 1578. The church, as it stands today, was first built in 1720 and is known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Abandoned (Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados).
The Mariano Marcos Memorial High School is located at 2090 Dr. M. Carreon St., Sta. Ana, Manila.
